Pastor Sally’s Devotional 11/24

Dear friends,

It’s snowing as I write this today and it is so beautiful outside.  I love the first snow.  It’s pure whiteness always strikes me.  Later in the season when it’s muddy by the side of the road and requires multiple shovelings, I’m not always such a fan, but today with the first snow, I’m smitten.  I find myself whistling Christmas songs and feeling wrapped up in that cozy winter peace.

Of course snow has its own purpose besides reminding us of Christmas and drawing our eyes to the window.  Snow, like rain, waters the earth and nurtures the seed that fell to the ground in the autumn waiting to bloom and grow in the spring with the warmer weather.  We need the snow to soak into the ground just as we need the spring rains.  The prophet Isaiah writes:

As the rain and the snow
    come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
    without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

                                                            Isaiah 55: 10-11

Isaiah used the snow and its purpose in bringing forth the seed from the ground that provides bread for the nations to remind us that the word of God has purpose as well.  God’s word is not meant to stay closed between the front and back covers of our Bibles.  It is mean to be read and heard and pondered so it may also grow and flourish in each of us.  God’s word is meant to produce in us good thoughts, good faith and good deeds.

Peace,

Pr. Sally
