Pastor Sally’s Devotional 12/5

| December 5, 2020

Dear friends,

In my devotional reading today,  Detrick Bonhoeffer said something that surprised me.  He said we are silent in the early hours of each day because God is supposed to have the first Word of the day.  Likewise we are silent in the last hours of the day because God is to have the last Word of each day.

I got to thinking about this, because there have been seasons in my life when I have said, “Good morning, Lord” as the first words of the day.  Likewise when I was a youth and young adult, I did my scripture reading at the end of the day and then often fell asleep while praying.  I like Bonhoeffer’s thought that our first thought and last thought of each day is of the Lord and that as we are attentive to the Lord, we listen for what God might have to say to us, and we pause in awe at the gift of life given us by Almighty God.

The psalmist says:

For God alone my soul waits in silence,

    for my hope is from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

On God rests my deliverance and my honor;

    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;

    pour out your heart before him;

    God is a refuge for us.  Psalm 62: 5-8

I think tonight I will pause before God in thanksgiving and praise before I sleep.  And in the morning, I will honor God for the great gift of a new day.

Peace,

Pr. Sally
