Pastor Sally’s Devotional 7/29

Dear friends,

Did you know that dolphins were an early Christian symbol?  They show up in the catacombs and in early Christian art.  I took the picture here in the museum at the ruins of Philippi where Paul first preached and established the church.  Today you can visit the ruins of Philippi and the museum which holds many of the finer small objects.  I like this little dolphin.  I think he looks like a happy fellow.

So why dolphins?  Dolphins are actually very friendly and helpful creatures.  They were known around the Mediterranean as the “Mariner’s friend.”  There were legends about dolphins leading lost ships back to safer shores, and there are pictures in ancient Greek art of dolphins giving rides to both humans and Greek gods.  The early church quickly adopted the dolphin as a symbol for Jesus.  Jesus is the one who seeks and saves the lost leading us to safer shores.

O Lord Jesus, in these tumultuous times with disease and unrest, come seek us out and bring us to safer shores.  Amen.

Peace,

Pr. Sally
