Pastor Sally’s Devotional I

| April 17, 2020

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence,

and do not take your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and sustain in me a willing spirit.

                          Psalm 51: 10-12

Friends,

We woke up to snow this morning.  It’s certainly not what I was looking for, but it is beautiful.  It makes me feel quiet inside.  I had plans for this morning.  It is one of the first real days off my husband and I have taken since the coronavirus entered our lives.  I had planned to work in the garden in the back yard.  I have spring vegetable seeds waiting to be planted and my strawberry plants arrived at the door last week.  But I think the garden will have to wait.  The snow has called for new plans.

This virus has disrupted our plans and our lives in similar ways.  In many ways it has slowed down our lives even for those of us who are still working.  We simply can’t run about like we used to.  We are forced into being home bodies.  We cook our own meals… all of them.  We entertain ourselves in our own homes.  And we have space and quiet to think in new ways.  I think it has caused us to think of God more.  It has done so for me.

The psalmist asks God to create a new heart in him and to put a right spirit within.  This is my prayer in these unusual days.  As our plans are changed, out of necessity, may God be at work in the new open spaces in our calendar, drawing us ever closer.

Peace,

Pr. Sally
