This week’s worship scripture is from 1 Peter 2:2-10 and mentions Jesus being the cornerstone.  Here are som videos that may help you and your children better understand masonry and the significance of a cornerstone.

 

Pay attention to the first few minutes of this video.  Notice how the basic shape of the building was laid out, but once the first cinder block was laid, everything else was measured and placed according to that one block.  That is the primary function of a cornerstone. (Only the first few minutes of the video matter for today’s lesson.)

 

If you can get your kids to watch all of this, that would be great, but the first half is really the most important part.  He talks about some of the other important things about cornerstones and what it means for Jesus to be the cornerstone of our lives.

 

This is a National Geographic video that shows how Jesus might have grown up, and that he would have been more of a stone mason than a woodworker.  This is a pretty short video.

 

In this video a young man builds a pyramid from scratch, starting by making and firing the brick, all the way to putting on the final touches.  If your kids don’t want to watch the whole thing, pay attention to the making of the bricks, and how he got started on building.  If you need to skip ahead, that’s fine.  

Since the young man in the video makes his own bricks, you might want to ask your kids to think about what it would be like to do this kind of work all day, every day.  One of the main jobs of the Israelites when they were slaves in Egypt was making bricks.
