Pastor Sally’s Devotional 9/14

| September 21, 2020

Dear friends,

I was reading in Matthew’s gospel the other day about a moment when Jesus was teaching about the character of a person.  He said, “You will know them (people) by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.” Matt. 7: 16 – 17. I think we all know this.  We say, “Actions speak louder than words.”  We know that our actions say a lot about who we are.

The Apostle Paul picked up on this teaching of Jesus and expanded it in the letter to the Galatians to specify just what kind of fruit we want to be looking for in ourselves as Christian people.  “… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Gal 5:22-23)   And that got me to thinking about a fun little children’s song.  It’s actually a pretty challenging song for children to learn because you need to learn to repeat that list of “fruit words” in order.  Still I think it’s worth the effort because I think it’s good for children to know what Christian character looks like.  It’s probably good for adults to know the same.

Here’s the link to the song.  I hope it sticks in your ear and you sing it the rest of today and into tomorrow!                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rezg4jYFoj0
